NEXTTRAINTO

NextTrainTo Features and Tips

Discover all the features of NextTrainTo and tips for getting the most out of the app.

01

URL Shortcuts for Stations

NextTrainTo supports friendly URL slugs for quick access to stations and routes. Instead of using complex URLs, you can type station names directly in the address bar.

Single station
Go to nexttrainto.com/cardiff-central to see departures from Cardiff Central. Station names use lowercase with hyphens replacing spaces.
Station to station
Go to nexttrainto.com/cardiff-central/bristol-parkway to see trains from Cardiff Central to Bristol Parkway.
CRS codes
You can also use three-letter CRS codes like nexttrainto.com/CDF or nexttrainto.com/CDF/BPW - these will redirect to the friendly URL.
02

Journey Planning with Connections

When there are few direct trains between your stations, NextTrainTo automatically finds journey options with connections. The app identifies the best interchange stations and matches connecting services, showing you complete journey options with realistic connection times.

04

Bookmarking Routes

Because each route has its own URL, you can bookmark your regular journeys for instant access. Add nexttrainto.com/your-home-station/your-work-station to your browser bookmarks or phone home screen for one-tap access to your commute information.

05

Auto-Refresh Live Boards

Departure boards automatically refresh every 30 seconds, so you always see the latest information. A countdown shows when the next refresh will happen. When you switch to another tab, auto-refresh pauses to save data, and immediately refreshes when you return. The board also refreshes automatically when your internet connection is restored.

06

Saved Routes and Favourites

Save your regular routes for one-tap access. When viewing any departure board, tap the star icon in the header to save that route. Your saved routes appear as tiles on the home screen when no route is selected. You can save up to 10 routes. Note that A to B and B to A are saved as separate routes. Tap "Edit" to remove saved routes.

07

Smart Commute

When you save both directions of a commute (e.g. Home to Work and Work to Home), NextTrainTo detects this and shows a "My Commute" banner on the home screen. Before noon, it shows your outbound commute; after noon, your return journey. If location is available, it will instead show the route from whichever station you are nearest to. Tap "GO" to instantly load your commute departures.

08

Leave Now Estimation

When your location is available and departures are showing, NextTrainTo estimates when you need to leave to catch your train. It calculates walking distance to the station, adds a 3-minute buffer, and shows a colour-coded card: green means plenty of time, yellow means leave soon, and red means leave now. This updates automatically with each refresh.

09

Delay Notifications

Tap the bell icon in the departure board header to enable delay notifications. When enabled, NextTrainTo will send a browser notification if any service changes from "On time" to delayed or cancelled. Notifications only fire while the app is open in your browser.

10

Install as App

NextTrainTo can be installed on your phone or computer for quick access from your home screen. On supported browsers, you will see an install banner, or you can use your browser menu to "Add to Home Screen". The installed app works offline, showing cached data when you lose signal.

11

Offline Support

NextTrainTo works offline after your first visit. If you lose internet connection, the app shell loads from cache and shows the last available departure data with an "Offline" indicator. When your connection returns, the board automatically refreshes with live data.

12

Upcoming Services (Overnight)

When no trains are currently running on your route (typically overnight between 1am and 5am), NextTrainTo automatically looks ahead to find when the next train departs. Instead of showing a disruption warning, it displays an "Upcoming Services" panel showing the first train time and a preview of the next few services. This helps you plan ahead without mistaking normal overnight gaps for service disruptions.

13

Real-Time Updates

All departure information updates in real-time. Platform assignments, delays, and cancellations are reflected as soon as the railway systems report them. Boards auto-refresh every 30 seconds, or tap the refresh button for immediate updates.

14

Viewing Calling Points

Tap on any departure to expand it and see the full list of calling points. This shows all intermediate stations the train will stop at, along with scheduled arrival times. Useful for checking if your train stops at a particular station.
